Two of the best divers in the area squared off in a dramatic showdown Thursday in a preview of what should be a tight, 11-dive battle at sectional in February, and while the diving went to AC’s Damon Light, it was Bellmont who won both the boys’ and the girls’ meets in the warm waters of the pool in Monroe.
The drama played out one meter above the waters of the AC pool, with each announcement of a dive by PA announcer Steve Christner adding to the drama. Bellmont’s Logan Whitacre, fresh off a third NE8 diving title, knew that he would need a perfect night to knock off Damon Light on his own board. The drama ended with Light potentially breaking his own school record on the final dive.
While Light fell 1.65 points short of his record, he did have enough to claim a comfortable victory over Whitacre, who figures to be a real challenge with an 11-dive program at the sectional.
The Braves dominated the action that was in the water, claiming satisfying wins by 40-50 points in both meets.
The Jets are set to compete in Saturday’s ACAC swim meet if the weather allows.
NOTES & TIMES:
-Kale Rathbun’s winning time in the 50 was his career best and also represents the best effort of any Adams County swimmer this season.
-Bellmont freshman Samuel Juengel also set a PR in the 50, finishing one second behind Rathbun.
-Rathbun also swam the anchor leg of the 200 Free Relay, which was won by the Jets with a season-best time for the team. Logan Heiman, Tristen Wurm and Ethan Crockett swam ahead of Rathbun’s final 50.
Girls
-The Jets surprised the Braves in the opening event, winning the medley relay with a new season-best time, one that was three seconds faster than the previous season best.
-Ella Bluhm swam her season best in the 500 for the Jets with a 6:46.
-Madeline Witte had a great winning time in the breaststroke, finishing in 1:23.55 to set a new personal career best. She also moved to the top of the Adams County leaderboard in that event.
