The Heritage Patriots made their second trip west to Northfield Monday night, returning to run their five kilometers after Saturday’s scheduled cross country opener was called off due an intense thunderstorm that passed through central Indiana at just the right time.

The Patriots featured some new names in the varsity lineup and had a solid showing, with Corban Roth leading the way to a second-place finish behind the home Norsemen.

Roth won the race by 80 seconds, pacing the field with his experience and leadership. He was within ten seconds of his time in last year’s season-opening race and it will likely, like last year, be the only time he runs in the 19s the rest of the season.

Sophomore Alex Smith also had a good run for the Patriots, cutting 2:18 from where he was at the start of his ninth grade season.

A year also made a big difference for William Voglewede, who was 35 seconds faster than last year’s opening 5K time, finishing 11th overall in 24:17.00.
The Patriots will return to a normal Saturday running schedule, albeit with one day’s less rest, at Saturday’s South Side Invitational.
