John Summers is a man on a mission and – citing past shared ventures – Decatur City Council is more than willing to do its small part to assist him.
Summers, a member of Adams County Council, is trying to rectify a situation which has long been talked about as well as long been allowed to go unchanged.
The Adams County Courthouse, in the heart of downtown Decatur, has for years been without a flag on the pole atop the splendid structure. “No one really knows how long,” Summers told city council Tuesday night.
Summers explained how he was able to get the pulley system freed and able to operate.
The county has invested $9,600 for repair work by Fuhrman Electric, but another problem cropped up as a mechanism gets stuck.

For $6,600, Smith Erectors can repair that problem, so Summers asked city council if it would be willing to share the cost with the county.
The reaction was swift and supportive. The city’s share will be $3,300.
“I know it’s complicated (the long-standing problems with the flag’s system), but I’ve had many people ask me why there is no flag on the courthouse,” Councilman Matt Dyer said.
“I’ve had out-of-towners ask me why,” Mayor Dan Rickord quickly added.
Councilwoman Jenny Bowers-Shultz noted how “the county helped us with the pickleball courts and with other projects.”
The mayor cited some of those projects that the city and county have worked on together.
“We need a flag (atop the courthouse), it’s part of our city,” Rickord said.
