Decatur has an open burning ban, but the city’s board of works and safety recently gave permission to violate that ban – to the fire department.
The department is planning to update a fire-safety video it has had since the late 1970s. The video is shown to elementary students during the department’s presentations at the Survive Alive House at Worthman Field.

The program gives youngsters fire-safety tips that they can incorporate in their homes.
The fire department is receiving major assistance from Champion Homes in Decatur. And, Fire Chief Jeff Sheets told the board, the media arts class at Huntington University has expressed a keen interest in producing the video update.

Sheets told WZBD.com that Champion will build outside on its S. 13th St. property a pair of 10-foot by 10-foot square boxes. One will be the mock-up of a kitchen, the other a family room mock-up.
The kitchen will have a grease fire and the new video will demonstrate multiple ways to douse the fire, such as using a lid, baking soda, a fire extinguisher, etc.
The family room video will show how fast a fire can spread, Sheets explained.
No date has been set for the exercise.
