The Decatur Police Department is short-handed once again.
Assistant Police Chief Chris Brite told the board of works and safety at its meeting Tuesday night that patrolman Jagg Nunez has resigned.
Brite said the Winchester native, who had come to the Decatur PD from the Portland PD, had resigned previously, then returned to the department.
Nunez joined the department in Decatur in February of 2021.
The resignation came up as Brite asked for and received permission to begin the process of hiring a new officer.
“It will take us several months to get this going,” Brite commented.

At full strength, the Decatur police force consists of 20 officers: Chief Kevin Gerber, Brite, with three sergeants, two detectives and 13 patrolmen, one of whom is a school resource officer when school is in session.
Now, though, the department is down to 19 and will be for some time.
ARPA OKAY: City council approved Brite’s request to use $2,792.60 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to hire Lexipol to put together all the department’s SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) this year.
“The (Adams) county did this two years ago and they love it,” Brite said. Among others employing the service are Wells County, Fort Wayne PD, and several others, he added.
Already in the budget for next year is $11,100 to continue the service.
“Created in 2003 by two attorneys (and former law enforcement officers), Lexipol was born from a vision of a better, safer way to run a public safety agency,” the company says on its website. “Today, we serve more than 2 million public safety and government professionals with a range of informational and technological solutions…”
