PRESS RELEASE
The Adams County Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the Adams County Sheriff’s Department was recently awarded an ACCF grant for an upgrade to the standard uniform. The department is in the process of upgrading its uniform from brown leather duty belts, attachments, and boots to a lighter, but sturdier, black nylon duty belt with plastic attachments and black boots. This decision was made to enhance officer health due to hip, joint, and back problems.
Dan Mawhorr, Adams County Sheriff, expressed appreciation to the ACCF on behalf of the Adams County Sheriff’s Department officers for the support of upgraded equipment. Mawhorr noted that the new belts will allow for the weight of gear to be distributed more evenly across their waist than the traditional leather duty belt.
Ken Ketzler, ACCF Board member and grants committee member, added that providing this equipment will make the necessary weigh the law enforcement officers carry much less stress on their bodies. This is very important for these officers.
This ACCF grant was made possible through unrestricted funds sponsored by the Cletus & Bette Miller Memorial, Daniel Niblick Family and Roger & Betty Singleton Memorial Community Enrichment funds.
Clete and Bette Miller are best known for their entrepreneurial work with the establishment of the popular Back 40 Junction. For those that worked with the Adams Memorial Hospital EMS, they remember that Bette was best known for her involvement with the EMS. Both Clete and Bette significantly influenced Adams County with their ingenuity, work ethic, professionalism, and notable additions to our community.
The Daniel Niblick Family Fund was established in 2004. The long, respectable history of the Niblick family is recorded back to 1866 when Jesse Niblick and John Crawford purchased the landmark store in Decatur. Starting in 1930, Dan Niblick, with children Harold and Mildred, operated the store, referring typically to its shortened version as simply: Niblick’s. Best remembered by residents, siblings Harold and Mildred Niblick operated the store until it closed January 1996.
The Roger and Betty Singleton Memorial Community Enrichment fund was established by David and Sandra (Singleton) Collier in honor of Sandra’s parents. After serving in the U.S. Army, Roger returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Betty Jane Miller in 1948. Roger and Betty raised four children: Sandra Joan Collier, Susan Jeanette Fuelling, Saran Joy Winkler, and Scott James. Sandy reports they loved this community and helping others. With this fund, they are remembered and continue to serve this community.
