She helped lead the Starfires to a 13-11 record last season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily for Hall of Fame coach Wayne Kreiger, Macy Pries, a senior, is still around, ready to join her big sister in the 1,000-point club. Trausch\u2014the team\u2019s most improved player, according to Kreiger\u2014averaged only 2.6 points, but that was in limited minutes. \u201cShe played mostly JV ball last year,\u201d Kreiger said, \u201cbut we moved her up toward the end, and she has continued to progress since last season. She averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds last year for the Jets. She may be the inside presence the Starfires needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Emmerson Smith can put points on the board too. Kreiger calls her \u201ca sneaky kind of scorer\u201d who can hit the three as well as drive. Junior Bekah Patterson played as a freshman but sat out last year. He has 616 career wins, fifth on the all-time Indiana list and second among active coaches. He knows how to adapt his strategy to his personnel. That means this year, despite his fondness for pressing, the lack of depth on his team will prevent using that strategy very much. \u201cI would like to press,\u201d he said. \u201cbut I think this is not a pressing team by my standards, so we will probably have to settle in more to the half-court game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pries is not only Kreiger\u2019s top offensive threat; she\u2019s also a tenacious defender, capable of shutting down the opponent\u2019s best player. If she gets enough help from her teammates\u2014and Kreiger thinks she will\u2014the Starfires\u2019 half-court pressure could be one of their strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seamlessgutter.net\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/98.158.76.108\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?resize=600%2C224\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?resize=300%2C112&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kreiger pegs defending champion Jay County, despite graduating all-stater Renna Schwieterman, as a favorite for the ACAC title again, along with Woodlan, last season\u2019s runner-up. South Adams tied Heritage for third with a 3-3 conference record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Starfires will compete in the 2A Bluffton Sectional, where defending champion Bishop Luers is the heavy favorite. The Knights, led by the return of leading scorer and rebounder Addie Shank, had no seniors last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Adams will open the season on the road, taking on the state\u2019s sixth-ranked 2A team, the Eastbrook Panthers, on Saturday, November 4.
