{"id":8996,"date":"2023-11-03T05:22:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T09:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=8996"},"modified":"2023-11-03T05:22:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T09:22:52","slug":"41-point-run-by-leo-takes-down-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/03\/41-point-run-by-leo-takes-down-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"41-point run by Leo takes down Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>RANDY HISNER <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After allowing the Heritage girls\u2019 basketball team to take a two-point lead late in the first quarter, the Leo Lions reeled off 41 straight points on their way to routing the Patriots, 55-23, at the Lions\u2019 Den Thursday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freshman guard Trinitee Brown hit a three-pointer from left of the top of the key with a little over a minute left in the opening period to give Heritage (0-1) its last lead of the game at 9-7. Moments later Leo forward Kayla Adams tied it with a bucket on the right block. Teammate Malina Lape scored on a putback on the Lions\u2019 next possession to give Leo (2-0) an 11-9 advantage at the quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when the thermometer started to register below freezing for the Pats as missed shots and numerous turnovers prevented them from scoring again until Danica Fuller finally broke the ice with a three-pointer ten seconds into the fourth quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seamlessgutter.net\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/98.158.76.108\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?resize=600%2C224\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Sure-FloLogo-600w.jpg?resize=300%2C112&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, of course, the Lions were out of reach. Fuller\u2019s bucket only cut the lead to 48-12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leo\u2019s Leah Shappell scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the middle quarters, the 6-0 sophomore star showing her versatility with a mix of jumpers, drives, and free throws. She got plenty of help from Malina Lape\u2019s eight points in that same stretch and seven points from Adams in the third quarter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Patriot offense did wake up a bit in the final quarter, hitting four threes to outscore Leo 14-7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Patriots graduated 75% of their scoring from last year\u2019s 7-16 team, so coach Nicole Sisson knows there will be growing pains while she relies heavily on a strong freshman class. \u201cOur offense went a little stagnant there for a couple quarters,\u201d she said, \u201cbut we have a young group, and they have to learn to work through that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown\u2019s quickness at point guard helped get the Patriots off to a good start, as did fellow freshman Audra Bickel, who scored Heritage\u2019s first four points. \u201cBoth of them were kind of forced into roles that they have to learn on the fly,\u201d noted Sisson, \u201cbut with both you got glimpses of what eventually they\u2019ll be capable of as basketball players. They\u2019re fun to coach. They\u2019re very coachable, and they\u2019re just going to get better. Fuller led the team with five points. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a shortcut to experience and all the things you learn as a high school player,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we\u2019re optimistic. We\u2019re going to get into the gym tomorrow and work to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Leo, Adams finished with 11 points, Lape with 10. Fuller led Heritage with five. Bickel had four.
