{"id":6685,"date":"2023-09-18T19:51:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T23:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=6685"},"modified":"2023-09-18T19:51:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T23:51:11","slug":"old-debts-written-off-antennas-sold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/18\/old-debts-written-off-antennas-sold\/","title":{"rendered":"Old debts written off; antennas sold"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Decatur has written off just over $15,000 in delinquent utility accounts, but officials say the losses have been even greater in previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the accounts are five years old and the State Board of Accounts deems accounts that old to be \u201cuncollectible\u201d and says they must be written off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the recent meeting of the board of works and safety, Utilities Superintendent Kevin Hackman received permission to do just that with the latest five-year-old debts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accounts being forgotten were around the $30,000 mark a few years ago, \u201cso they&#8217;ve been going down,\u201d Hackman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the reason for that is the city&#8217;s hiring of a collection agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While those accounts were being dumped, the police department was bringing in some money, receiving permission from the board to sell two unused antennas to the Berne Police Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/98.158.76.108\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303-1024x585.jpg?resize=640%2C366\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?resize=1024%2C585&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?resize=300%2C171&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?resize=768%2C439&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Decatur Police Chief Kevin Gerber said the antennas \u201care kinda hard to find\u201d and Berne offered to pay $300 each for them, the cost that the Decatur PD had in the devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also at the board of works and city council meetings;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* The city fire department was given the okay to hire ProTech to clean up a mold problem in the basement of the fire station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ProTech bid $14,474.31 for the work, while Paul Davis Restoration bid $14,462.60.
