Julia Arnold is the quiet, hard-working leader of the South Adams golf team and she does it with hard work and humility, challenging herself each time she puts a club in her hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you didn\u2019t know her background,\u201d theorizes head coach Chris Toledo, \u201cyou\u2019d think she was an only child on the biggest farm in the county.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comment is no slight to farm kids, but rather the summation of astonishment he feels about Arnold\u2019s work ethic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A level of mutual respect has created a great relationship between head coach Chris Toledo and South Adams No. 1 Julia Arnold. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe is always the first to warm up and the last one to leave,\u201d says the coach. \u201cHer voluntary practice attendance nearly doubles the rest of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While she admits that she doesn\u2019t watch any golf on television, Arnold says that the game is challenging to her and it\u2019s one of the reasons she loves it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s impacted my life in a lot of ways, both on and off the course,\u201d Arnold admits. \u201cGolf has introduced me to new people and allowed me to gain new friendships outside the season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mental side of the game is what piques Arnold\u2019s interest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour mental game is very important,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arnold has the added pressure of always being paired with the best golfer on opposing teams as part of her duties as team leader and No. 1 player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s helped me build skills to keep the right mindset for other parts of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cother parts of her life\u201d category is a diverse one for Julia, who enjoys simply being outside in the warm weather as part of her training for swimming in the winter. She also enjoys painting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very relaxing and gratifying to see it when you are finished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in her third year, Arnold is a veteran at No. 1 for coach Toledo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast year was a big eye opener for her,\u201d he admits. \u201cTurning in low scores while playing with and against some of the best players was tougher than I think she thought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in those moments that Toledo noticed Arnold focusing on her mental toughness and playing for every stroke without focusing on the end number – a classic pitfall for any golfer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe quickly discovered the other side of golf,\u201d he says. \u201cThe six inches between your ears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toledo believes it\u2019s the joy of playing that has made the difference for his ace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you fill that six-inch space with joy and a positive attitude, the anger and negative thoughts disappear. That joy can overcome all the other difficulties you find on a golf course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arnold notes that there is not much personal glory in her choice of sports, with golf and swimming often not making big headlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think some think that it\u2019s an easy sport and just a hobby,\u201d she says. \u201cI practice on my off days because I am motivated to try and achieve my goals in golf and better my game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julia Arnold has continued to improve throughout her high school career thanks to hard work, dedication and the mechanics of her swing. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The coach says Arnold gets plenty of support from her No. 1 fans, Jason & Emily Arnold – her parents. He\u2019s also partial to Julia for another reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s the only girl on the team who gets my jokes,\u201d he chuckles. \u201cShe\u2019s humble and she is clever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julia Arnold has begun the year with several rounds under 50 and she is working on making her way down to bogey golf and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlaying golf alone with just yourself and the course in front of you is a great way to clear your head and relax.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
