{"id":4535,"date":"2023-07-21T17:44:55","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T21:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=4535"},"modified":"2023-07-21T17:44:57","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T21:44:57","slug":"hive-buzz-are-more-hours-affordable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/21\/hive-buzz-are-more-hours-affordable\/","title":{"rendered":"HIVE buzz: are more hours affordable?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kim Brandt has done such an excellent job as director of the HIVE in downtown Decatur that it&#8217;s causing some problems for city officials \u2013 good problems, such as possibly needing to extend hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBasically, we&#8217;re seeing growing pains,\u201d said Councilman Matt Dyer, sitting as mayor pro tem at city council&#8217;s July 18 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/98.158.76.108\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303-1024x585.jpg?resize=468%2C266\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-213\" width=\"468\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?resize=1024%2C585&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?resize=300%2C171&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Kukelhan-bc-artwork-for-website-2303.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandt (photo), who took over the post a year ago after some stutters getting the cultural center going, is contracted to perform 20 hours a week at the HIVE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s becoming a center for the community,\u201d she told council, noting that some $40,000 of art work is currently hanging and for sale in the HIVE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have stepped into this role and have really taken hold of it,\u201d Dyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandt says she believes arts sales could be improved with more open hours. \u201cWe are currently trying to figure out what that looks like,\u201d she said in a prepared statement. \u201cI would like more hours to get more things done, but I am retired and don&#8217;t want to be committed to work the exact same hours every week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city gets 20% of each art sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been discussion with the arts commission and Mayor Dan Rickord about adding a second person to the payroll, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked by Dyer if she would be willing to do more hours, Brandt said she could handle 30 hours a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also pointed out that Sandy Uhrick volunteers to have the HIVE open on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HIVE occupies the bottom floor of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;St. Lofts.
