According to NHTSA, a Live Alcohol Workshop provides an optimal training environment for officers learning to detect alcohol- impaired drivers. Officers are required to complete refresher training in SFSTs at least once every three years.
During the workshop, community volunteers consume carefully measured amounts of alcohol based on their sex and weight. Officers then have the opportunity to administer standardized field sobriety tests to the volunteers, providing valuable hands-on experience in recognizing the signs of alcohol impairment.
This year’s workshop began with a special guest speaker, Kaylee Heckber, whose life was forever changed by an impaired driver on March 9, 2023. At the time, Kaylee was a 17-year-old girl preparing to graduate from high school and begin college. On March 9, 2023, the vehicle she was driving was struck by a drunk driver near the intersection of State Road 124 and County Road 700 W, near the Adams and Wells County line. Officer A.J. Bertsch of the Monroe Police Department, Detective Joshua Kimberlin, Corporal Seth Prince, and Deputy David Lanning of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash.
When Officer Bertsch and Detective Kimberlin arrived on scene, Kaylee had no pulse and was not breathing. Officer Bertsch immediately began CPR while Detective Kimberlin applied an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). After several minutes of lifesaving efforts, Kaylee regained a pulse.
Kaylee had been ejected from her vehicle and sustained extensive, life-threatening injuries, including two collapsed lungs, a severed spleen, a broken clavicle, numerous lacerations to her face and body, damage to her colon, small intestines, and kidneys, and six tears to her left ear. She also suffered a traumatic brain injury. Kaylee underwent emergency surgery and was placed on a ventilator.
Over the past three and a half years, Kaylee has made a remarkable recovery. Her participation in this year’s workshop was especially meaningful, as it provided her with the opportunity to meet, for the first time, the officers who helped save her life that night in March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"502\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Alochol-workshop.jpg?resize=640%2C502&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Alochol-workshop.jpg?resize=1024%2C803&ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Alochol-workshop.jpg?resize=300%2C235&ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Alochol-workshop.jpg?resize=768%2C602&ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Alochol-workshop.jpg?w=1170&ssl=1 1170w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
In recognition of her perseverance and willingness to share her story, Kaylee was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation, challenge coins, and a patch by Officer Bertsch, Detective Kimberlin, Corporal Prince, and Deputy Lanning.
During her presentation, Kaylee reminded the officers in attendance that impaired driving has real consequences and affects real people. She also emphasized the importance of continued training and proactive OWI enforcement.
Kaylee reminded officers that every drunk or impaired driver they remove from the roadway represents an opportunity to prevent another tragedy like the one that forever changed her life.
Officers from the following agencies took part in the training; Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur Police Department, Berne Police Department, Geneva Police Department, Monroe Police Department, and Adams County EMS.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the community volunteers who participated in the training.
