{"id":40164,"date":"2026-09-22T08:49:02","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T12:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=40164"},"modified":"2026-09-22T08:49:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T12:49:03","slug":"state-awards-funding-to-local-schools-for-safety-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/22\/state-awards-funding-to-local-schools-for-safety-upgrades\/","title":{"rendered":"State awards funding to local schools for safety upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams County schools recently received more than $123,000 from Indiana&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/dhs\/grants-management\/secured-school-safety-grant-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Secured School Safety Grant Program<\/a>, according to State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lehman said the program, which was established through legislation the General Assembly passed in 2013, provides matching grants to school corporations, accredited non-public schools and charter schools to help pay for critical safety improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Security is essential to learning and for teachers to effectively do their jobs,&#8221; Lehman said. &#8220;This funding has helped schools throughout the state pay for upgrades that help improve the safety of our classrooms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security provided more than $26 million in grants to nearly 500 schools and corporations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Area schools receiving grants include Adams Central Community Schools ($32,465), North Adams Community Schools ($52,652) and South Adams Schools ($38,700).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lehman said the matching grants can be used for a variety of safety measures, including hiring school resource officers, assessing site vulnerabilities, purchasing equipment and technology and implementing bullying prevention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this round of funding, Indiana has invested more than $240 million in school safety since the program started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, House Republicans passed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2025\/bills\/house\/1637\/details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a>&nbsp;moving the Office of School Safety to IDHS, centralizing safety efforts and providing additional support and resources to schools.
