Gage, 73, of Decatur, IN, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Decatur, IN, on May 22, 1953, the son of the late Gerald A. and Mary K. (Leonard) Gage. On October 1, 1977, he married Anne M. Gaffer and after 33 years together she preceded him in death on November 22, 2010.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School and Bellmont High School Class of 1971. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. J.J. Seimetz Council 864.

Roger served as a volunteer for the Decatur Fire Department for 42 years from 1980 – 2022 and was the Treasurer for the volunteer’s for many terms. He built homes for Arnold Lumber for decades before being appointed Superintendent of the Building & Zoning Department for the City of Decatur for 18 ½ years until his retirement in 2017.

He thoroughly and whole heartedly cherished his 65 plus summers on Lake George. Roger was never one to pass up a good time and was there to add life to any occasion. He was known for his famous one liners and almost always had a smart comment or clever comeback to whatever situation. Most recently, he would not even let his sickness dampen his deep quick-wittedness.

Always one to lend a helping hand to family and friends and even as he got older and couldn’t be the one in the action he was there to “supervise”. His many years of being a builder gave him great foresight for what your home and shop may or may not need for the next 5 to 10 years down the road.

Above all he had a soft spot in that ornery heart for his grandkids, who he loved more than anyone, maybe more than his own kids. Perhaps due to pulling double duty for his Anne. He was an avid lifelong fan of the Indiana Hoosiers, Notre Dame, and the Yankees.

He is survived by his 3 children, Kate (Ryan) Brickley of Decatur, Taylor (Brean) Gage of Decatur, and Becca (Jordan) Speaks of Convoy, OH; 2 brothers, Steve (Carla) Gage of NC and Pat (Judy) Gage of MI; a sister, Joan Gross of Decatur; 10 grandchildren, Jayci, Jaron, Jevan, Anndyn, Colsen, Kenadie, Levi, Kinlee, Alivia, and Oaklynn.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, David Gage and a brother-in-law, Thomas Gross.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 1:30 p.m. Family requests any casual attire, but preferably I.U. or Notre Dame.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2026, in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father Jacob Runyon presiding. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the A.C.C.F. Decatur Volunteer Fire Department Scholarship Fund.

Roger W.
