soon, Mayor Dan Rickord said at the latest city council meeting.

The work is actually divided into four projects and the first, on Winchester St., is likely to start the last week of August, he said.

A second project, on Madison St. between Second and Seventh streets, is scheduled to begin the first week in September.

The work is expected to continue into next summer.

The $17 million overall project, federally mandated, is being funded through 35-year bonds.

At least 1,000 lead service lines are targeted, and more than a thousand water mains.

CITY SHUTDOWN: Many of the City of Decatur’s services will be shut down on Friday, August 28.

Mayor Dan Rickord said the city has long been on Adams County’s IT system, but will be switching to its own on that date.

So no bill paying and other such services will be available for one day.

Phone service will NOT be interrupted.

Also, the city police and fire departments will not be affected as they have their own IT systems.

POOL CLOSED: Parks department officials have announced that due to cooler-than-usual weather, overnight temperatures have been causing the pool water temperature to continue dropping.

So, with more rain and storms forecast, the decision was made to close the pool for the season.

“We want to thank everyone who came out and supported the pool this summer,” the department said on Facebook. “We appreciate you and look forward to seeing you again next season!”

BUG SPRAYING: Street/Sanitation Superintendent Matt Schultz told council at the same meeting that mosquito spraying is underway.

One-half of the city is done one night, then the other half the next night.

TWO OPENINGS: The city is taking applications for two positions: meter reader and water labor/operator.

More details, including job descriptions, are available at: www.cityofdecatur.in.gov.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. on August 27.

By BOB SHRALUKA WZBD.com The huge project to replace lead service lines and aged water mains in
