The official full start to the 2026-27 athletic year for high school teams came before the sun rose Monday morning in Adams County, kicking off a hopeful year for state-bound athletes and defending champs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the local girls golf teams technically got a practice in on Friday, the Monday of this week marks the true start for the rest of the fall seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boys soccer team at Bellmont started before the sun rose, kicking off their season with some conditioning as head coach Jake Briede and his staff re-instituted two-a-days for the program. The Braves were set for pairs of 6-8 training each day this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bellmont girls sat patiently on the sidelines until their first official practice got underway, with coach Rich Skaggs officially leading his first practice as head coach of the program. The team has shuffled titles, with Steve Lee moving to a volunteer assistant role, but continuity will be the key word for the successful program despite the different coaching monikers. Matt Converset has taken over the official JV coaching duties for the Braves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head football coach Blake Blaker was also set to lead his first official practice for the Braves Monday. The young coach arrived at Bellmont in the winter from Southern Wells. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere across Z Land, new coaches took over with Mary Jones taking the reins at Adams Central with the golf team, while veteran coaches like Ashley Buckingham and Randy Hisner took charge of their respective teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WZBD’s official start for fall will come Tuesday, when our cameras will be at Cross Creek for the annual start of competition, with the Bellmont Braves hosting South Adams, Adams Central, Heritage and others in their annual 18-hole invitational. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first opportunity to hear a fall sports contest on 92.7 FM will come on August 15th when the annual clash between Bellmont and Adams Central happens on the volleyball court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That fun fixture will wet the appetites of local sports fan for the week that will follow, as WZBD brings you a contest every day of the opening week, starting with the aforementioned Bellmont Braves taking on Carroll in girls soccer on Monday, August 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday will see the Braves travel to Bishop Dwenger in volleyball, with coach Craig Krull’s team back in 3A again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another exciting showdown between a local powerhouse and the Bellmont soccer team will come listeners’ way on Wednesday, the 19th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 20th will feature two more local volleyball teams as Norwell travels to Heritage to take on the Patriots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week-long extravaganza will finish with a bang – a quadruple-header of football games for the opening night of the gridiron season. Adams Central will head north for an epic clash at Bishop Luers, South Adams will go to Butler to play Eastside, Heritage will host New Haven and the Bellmont Braves will face a new opponent to start off the Blaker era, heading to Madison-Grant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
