{"id":37706,"date":"2026-07-09T12:14:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=37706"},"modified":"2026-07-09T12:14:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T16:14:29","slug":"pool-plugs-plentiful-keeping-it-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/09\/pool-plugs-plentiful-keeping-it-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Pool plugs plentiful, keeping it open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a patch here and a patch there, Decatur&#8217;s city pool is hanging in there, still keeping customers wet and cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pool&#8217;s leakage \u2013 first reported as severe in mid-June \u2013 has been reduced considerably, Chris Krull told city council at its Tuesday meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re making positive gains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krull, director of sports and facilities for the city&#8217;s parks and recreation department, informed council that what was once a loss of 12 inches of water in the pool in a 24-hour period has been reduced to 2 inches in that same time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pool staff has been hard at work finding holes\/cracks and putting epoxy in them, and that includes the largest hole, said Krull, sitting in for Parks Superintendent Cara Gerber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is checked daily and has been holding water for two weeks now,\u201d the report said. \u201cWe are hopeful that the good news continues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"526\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Decatur-pool-No.-3.jpg?resize=526%2C237&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Decatur-pool-No.-3.jpg?w=526&amp;ssl=1 526w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Decatur-pool-No.-3.jpg?resize=300%2C135&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 12-inch water loss per 24 hours was reduced to 7 inches after the closing of the baby pool. Repairs to a leak in a pipe in the pump house knocked the loss down to 5 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plugging another large hole trimmed that to 2 inches of water loss in 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dEach crack we find and plug up, we are losing less water. So we are hopeful we can get through this season,\u201d the Krull report pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The baby pool has been closed since mid-June.
