Decatur’s second Pride Festival will be held Saturday, June 27th, on the Madison St. Plaza, it was revealed at Tuesday night’s meeting of Decatur City Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will have expanded hours, 3-10 p.m., and a larger entertainment agenda, according to its organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The date was announced to council by Community Coordinator Jamie Gephart, through whom all requests to use the plaza must be directed. Gephart explained that Decatur Pride, the organization which puts together the event, is renting the use of the plaza. That, she said, will enable the group to manage its own security and control the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other events \u2013 wedding receptions, reunions, etc. \u2013 do the same, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alcoholic beverages will be served by Two Brothers and food trucks will be on hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No admission will be charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First St. will be closed between the parking lots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year’s first-ever Pride Fest stirred considerable comment<\/a>, both locally and from outside the community but was held without incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 28 people spoke about the event at a May 19th city council meeting, an unofficial count showing 16 in opposition, 10 supportive and two not offering a recognizable opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival, held on the plaza, drew a huge crowd of over 1,000 people and local police \u2013 who had a heavy presence at the event \u2013 said there were no problems with protesters and no demonstrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
