Trustee Fred Kunkel and Washington Twp. Trustee Corey Affolder attended the meeting, knowing there would be some discussion on another increase in the city&#8217;s charge to four townships for fire protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board raised the fees charged the townships \u2013 Root, Washington, St. Marys and Union \u2013 by 3% in June of last year. Board members made it clear at that time that more hikes will be coming in the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saunderstheaters.com\/van-wert-cinema\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"233\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/May16th2026.jpg?resize=640%2C233&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/May16th2026.jpg?resize=1024%2C373&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/May16th2026.jpg?resize=300%2C109&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/May16th2026.jpg?resize=768%2C280&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/May16th2026.jpg?w=1099&amp;ssl=1 1099w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe decided to raise it (the fees) a bit each year,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increases followed the discovery that the charges had been unchanged since some time in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The realization there was a need for increases came about as the board and city council were deciding how to pay for a new $2.7 million aerial ladder truck for the Decatur Fire Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was discovered that the four townships were providing just 10% of the city&#8217;s fire department budget while 22% of the city&#8217;s fire (and some medical) runs were being made to those townships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the recent meeting, Decatur Fire Chief Jeff Sheets pointed out that two fires in St. Marys Township last year cost his department approximately $13,000 \u2013 while the township&#8217;s fees would have totaled just $12,000 before last year&#8217;s increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics complied by the fire chief showed the department&#8217;s total run volume for 2025 was 683.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the figures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City, 536. Root, 66. Union, 20. St. Marys, 24. Washington, 31.
