The Decatur VFW’s new post will be the site this Friday of judging of the state VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art from throughout Indiana is entered in the contest which offers $37 million in scholarships, according to Adam Eguia, president of the local auxiliary and of the VFW’s Fourth District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and judging will begin at 6:30 at the post, 327 N. Second St., formerly the home of the Decatur Elks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is open to the public; there will be no admission charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judging the contest will be Decatur Mayor Dan Rickord, Adams Superior Court Judge Sam Conrad, and Tracy Manley, a member of the Decatur auxiliary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winning art will be sent to the VFW auxiliary’s national headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners from each state will go to the nationals to compete for the $37,000 in scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High school students, grades 9 through 12, are entered in the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 4,000 students across the U.S. were expected to participate in the event which began in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
