{"id":35214,"date":"2026-03-11T15:23:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T19:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=35214"},"modified":"2026-03-11T15:23:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T19:23:27","slug":"rr-crossings-an-ongoing-decatur-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/rr-crossings-an-ongoing-decatur-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"RR crossings an ongoing Decatur problem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a problem a vast majority of Decatur residents have experienced \u2013 some, in fact, experience it several times daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deteriorating railroad crossings in this fair city are a pain in the \u2026 axle and wheels and many anatomical places on the human body for people who cross them daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst are in the northwest portion of the city, in the area of the Bunge North American operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst of the worst is the Chicago, Fort Wayne &amp; Eastern (CF&amp;E) Railroad&#8217;s crossing on Washington St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"362\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Wash-frontal.jpg?resize=640%2C362&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Wash-frontal.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Wash-frontal.jpg?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Wash-frontal.jpg?resize=768%2C435&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Washington St.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not far behind is the one on Dayton Ave. which the CF&amp;E made some repairs on last summer. It was said at the time to be a temporary solution \u2026 and that has since been proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Dayton.jpg?resize=640%2C485&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Dayton.jpg?w=679&amp;ssl=1 679w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Dayton.jpg?resize=300%2C228&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Dayton Ave.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapidly catching up is the CF&amp;E crossing on Nuttman Ave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tracks on Second St. at Bunge are far from favorable, but probably the best of the four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crossing on Washington St. was noted at the recent meeting of Decatur City Council by member Jenny Bowers-Shultz, who said she had received a complaint from a local resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not sure we can do anything about it,\u201d she said. That is unquestionably true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Dan Rickord, though, offered some hope. \u201cWe are working with Bunge, but that&#8217;s all I can say about it for now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a railroad problem, not a Bunge problem,\u201d an unknown voice offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trains run nearly 24\/7 in that area of the city \u2013 ask the residents of the area about the all-night train whistles \u2013 and it&#8217;s Bunge traffic.
