Decatur&#8217;s parks system, the announcement being made by Mayor Dan Rickord at Tuesday night&#8217;s city council meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerber was chosen from an original field of 20 applicants for the new position within city government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very excited to have someone overseeing the management of the parks and recreation system,\u201d Rickord told WZBD.com. \u201cI care dearly about our parks system and am proud of the dedicated staff we currently have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe brings a great deal of experience in parks and recreation as well as years of service to the youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Superintendent,\u201d Gerber told WZBD.com. \u201cMy top priority is to create an environment where individuals of all ages and abilities feel a true sense of belonging in any recreation activity they choose to participate in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Gerber<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In her new role, Gerber \u2013 who has been serving as a special education teacher at Bellmont Elementary \u2013 will direct all levels of the parks department, from activities and assets to grounds and maintenance, explained Rickord, who made the appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is great about it is that there are really good team members currently overseeing the day-to-day activities,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cHer role will be to manage everything from a 30,000-foot level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerber, whose husband, Kevin, is the chief of police, will report to the city&#8217;s park board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She begins her new duties February 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my first few months, I plan to connect with staff and the community \u2014 listening first, learning what\u2019s working well, and identifying areas where we can continue to grow as a department,\u201d Gerber said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to get creative with programming, work closely with our community members, and ensure we\u2019re communicating clearly, all while managing taxpayer dollars responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a
