{"id":3338,"date":"2023-06-10T09:19:04","date_gmt":"2023-06-10T13:19:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=3338"},"modified":"2023-06-10T09:19:05","modified_gmt":"2023-06-10T13:19:05","slug":"el-nino-expected-to-strengthen-heading-into-this-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/10\/el-nino-expected-to-strengthen-heading-into-this-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"El Ni\u00f1o expected to strengthen heading into this winter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Kellan Heavican<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Brownfield Ag News<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared the arrival of El Nino.&nbsp; El Nino is a climate phenomenon that is marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, but its impact extends beyond the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atmospheric scientist Matt Makens says the Plains and higher Plains will benefit the most this summer.&nbsp; \u201cAny Plains that are right along the lee side of the Rockies, those will favor from precipitation,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve seen that impact already in that heavy precipitation events from the Panhandle of Texas, Western Kansas, Eastern Colorado, up into Montana.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He tells Brownfield depending on how strong the El Nino is, it could create drier conditions across much of the Corn Belt. \u201cEspecially Iowa, Missouri, so we\u2019re going to start to see the drought numbers increasing there,\u201d he says.&nbsp; \u201cPart of that is losing some precipitation, but also increasing the temperatures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No two weather patterns are alike, but Makens says when comparing El Nino models since 1990. \u201cThere is a dominating dry pocket from central Nebraska into northeastern Kansas, kind of into Missouri, and kind of into Iowa,\u201d he says. \u201cBut there\u2019s a bullseye of drought that hits that region and that\u2019s right on top of the existing drought.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for parts of the Eastern Corn Belt?&nbsp; \u201cOhio, Kentucky, Southern Indiana, southern Illinois, they kind of leaning in the drier than average direction,\u201d he says.&nbsp; \u201cAnd that does appear to be kind of what we\u2019ll see throughout June and again in August.
