{"id":31650,"date":"2025-12-27T10:43:02","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T15:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=31650"},"modified":"2025-12-27T10:43:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T15:43:04","slug":"year-later-grainery-rebuild-plans-are-solid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/27\/year-later-grainery-rebuild-plans-are-solid\/","title":{"rendered":"Year later, Grainery rebuild plans are solid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s been a year since fire leveled The Grainery Co. in downtown Decatur, and while plans to rebuild are on hold, they are still very much in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a quiet Saturday, December 7 \u2013 Pearl Harbor Day, incidentally \u2013 of 2024 when an afternoon fire wiped out the First St. business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"294\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Grainery-Dec.-25.jpg?resize=640%2C294&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Grainery-Dec.-25.jpg?resize=1024%2C470&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Grainery-Dec.-25.jpg?resize=300%2C138&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Grainery-Dec.-25.jpg?resize=768%2C352&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Grainery-Dec.-25.jpg?w=1055&amp;ssl=1 1055w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It took Decatur firefighters, added by Preble&#8217;s volunteer FD, nearly an hour to get the fire under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April of this year, Grainery co-owner Josh Franz told WZBD.com that the business would be rebuilt on its former site. In the meantime, operations are continuing in a nearby building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When can a rebuild begin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re just waiting now,\u201d co-owner Josh Franz recently said. \u201cWe have to get some things through the courts, then we can start rebuilding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How long might that be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can&#8217;t tell you,\u201d Franz replied. \u201cI&#8217;d say at least five months yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josh is not sure how much time will be required once the rebuild is cleared to begin. A lot will depend on contractors, he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not long after the fire, the business reopened in the building across the alley, which is where the Grainery initially begin operations over 30 years ago following purchase of the Legge Elevator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe did our Christmas in here and we are planning on planting next spring \u2013 greenhouse or not,\u201d Franz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, business has been good. \u201cThe community has shown us great support.
