{"id":30817,"date":"2025-11-20T10:57:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T15:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=30817"},"modified":"2025-11-20T10:57:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T15:57:53","slug":"walters-throwing-career-set-to-continue-at-miami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/20\/walters-throwing-career-set-to-continue-at-miami\/","title":{"rendered":"Walter&#8217;s throwing career set to continue at Miami"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>RANDY HISNER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heritage senior Alexa Walter will be a Division I athlete next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surrounded by family, friends, and coaches, Walter signed a track and field scholarship to Miami of Ohio Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony in the Heritage High School lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter attracted a lot of attention last spring when she added over four feet to her shot put PR in the state meet, catapulting herself from her 13<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;seed all the way to second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AlexaWalterSigning.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>WZBD&#8217;s Randy Hisner speaks with Alexa Walter about her signing. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter topped her own expectations with that finish. \u201cI was very surprised,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I threw that (her runner-up effort of 44-04.75) it was super-shocking and a great experience to have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, with 2025 state champ Gwen Howard of Whitko throwing for Duke University, Walter is the top returning female shot putter in the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/madisoncabinets.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"76\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?resize=640%2C76&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?resize=1024%2C121&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?resize=300%2C35&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?resize=768%2C91&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?resize=1536%2C181&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?w=1938&amp;ssl=1 1938w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Madison-web-ad.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter won the shot put and discus in the New Haven Sectional last year, as well as the ACAC title in the shot. She also put to rest the inaccurate stereotype of throwers as just big, lumbering athletes by taking second in the ACAC 100-meter dash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that were not enough to establish her all-around athletic prowess, she\u2019s an excellent volleyball player as well, earning second-team All-ACAC honors this fall. And, pointed out head track coach Matt Smith, she\u2019s got a lot more going for her. \u201cThe best part about Lexie,\u201d he said, \u201cis she\u2019s extremely coachable, has a great personality, and is an amazing student and all-around great person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_3099.jpg?resize=640%2C464&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30818\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_3099.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_3099.jpg?resize=300%2C218&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter credits the throws culture at Heritage for much of her success. \u201cThe throws culture here is just amazing,\u201d she said. \u201cObviously, we\u2019re serious when we need to be, but also it\u2019s just fun. There\u2019s no tension between us. We\u2019re not trying to beat each other. We\u2019re just trying to be at our best and supporting others when they\u2019re at their best. (Photo by Randy Hisner)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Throws coach Jason Habisch, Walters says, has a lot to do with that positive culture. \u201cHe has a very successful record,\u201d she pointed out. \u201cHe\u2019s super supportive; he trains us each individually for what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter, who will study kinesiology at Miami with a career goal to become a physical therapist, is keeping an open mind about which throws she will compete in for the RedHawks. At the college level, in addition to the shot and discus, she will have a chance to try the hammer and the javelin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been told I throw like I could be pretty good at the hammer, so I\u2019m looking forward to doing that for the first time,\u201d she said. \u201cI think the javelin looks super awesome too, so I\u2019m hoping to get into that too.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RANDY HISNER WZBD.com Heritage senior Alexa Walter will be a Division I athlete next year.
