{"id":30501,"date":"2025-11-03T18:18:33","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=30501"},"modified":"2025-11-03T18:18:34","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T23:18:34","slug":"bellmont-junior-chosen-for-headley-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/03\/bellmont-junior-chosen-for-headley-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Bellmont junior chosen for Headley class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayleena Hill is \u201cmore than honored\u201d to be chosen for an elite masterclass program organized by Fort Wayne native and Broadway star Heather Headley.<br>The Bellmont High School junior was one of 31 Fort Wayne-area students selected from over 100 applicants for the class to be taught by Tony Award recipient Headley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students, freshmen through seniors, represent 16 schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayleena admires Headley and looks up to her for inspiration. \u201cI hope to be a sponge and soak everything thing up,\u201d she told WZBD.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"449\" height=\"475\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-leading-choir.jpg?resize=449%2C475&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-leading-choir.jpg?w=449&amp;ssl=1 449w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-leading-choir.jpg?resize=284%2C300&amp;ssl=1 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Headley, a Northrop High School grad, has won a Grammy and is a Netflix star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to meet and work with these talented young people and hopefully help guide them to being our next emerging artists,\u201d Headley said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-day masterclass is more than a lesson in technique, according to Angie Fincannon, CEO and executive director of Pearl Arts Inc. in Fort Wayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a window into excellence, a bridge between aspiration and achievement,\u201d she told participants and their parents attending the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor these students, it\u2019s a chance to learn from someone who has walked the very path that they dream of, and for our community, it\u2019s a reminder that greatness can be shared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The masterclass will be held at the Pearl Arts Center in Fort Wayne on November 7 through 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"407\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-sings-anthem.jpg?resize=407%2C348&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-sings-anthem.jpg?w=407&amp;ssl=1 407w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Jayleena-sings-anthem.jpg?resize=300%2C257&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Jayleena sings anthem at Decatur&#8217;s 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0celebration<\/em>. <em>(Archive Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to representation, especially for African-American students, she (Headley) is who I look up to,\u201d Hill told Ashley Sloboda of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. \u201cBeing in a room with someone that has that much experience \u2013 especially on Broadway and in the theater district \u2013 gives me the opportunity to kind of be the sponge and soak it all up and really retain all the information that she\u2019s going to give us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayleena, the daughter of Jenny and Dave Hill of Decatur, is a member of the Voices of Unity Choir in Fort Wayne and has been performing in Fort Wayne for several years.
