Work on the Five Points roundabout (traffic circle) in Decatur is rapidly moving toward completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final layers of asphalt were scheduled to go down Tuesday and Wednesday, with landscaping likely to begin Friday or early next week, according to Decatur Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once that is finished, all that will be left to do are pavement markings and the erection of light poles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is now in its fourth month, having begun the first week in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last July 6 marked one year since the City of Decatur and INDOT officials signed all the necessary papers and made the project official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work is being overseen by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and mostly funded by the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E&B Paving of Muncie is the general contractor, having won the pact with a low bid of $2,493,109. Decatur’s match is 20% of the final cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHULTZ NAME: Meanwhile, the first public proposal for a name for the roundabout was made at the latest meeting of city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rajkumar Deonarine, commonly known as \u201cRaj,\u201d told council the traffic circle should carry the name of former mayor John Schultz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe served the city well,\u201d Raj said. \u201dI could walk into his office at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raj, who noted that he owns four properties in the area of the roundabout, even offered to pay for a sign carrying the name of the former mayor, who is battling health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
