Dates have been announced for the application process for the latest round of military banners to be hung in Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Adams County Antoine Rivarre chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is in charge of the program which it launched for 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applications may be obtained from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the Decatur meeting room of the Adams County Public Library in Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants may return their application, photo, payment and any other required items on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2-5 p.m. at the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families pay for the banners, which are later returned to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost of each banner is $110.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program honors active-duty military personnel, veterans living and deceased, KIAs, POWs and MIAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first year of the program, 36 veterans banners were hung. This year the number increased to 53.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The banners go up for Memorial Day and remain in place until Veterans Day, November 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the banners are placed in the downtown area, although the increased numbers this year have pushed that \u201carea\u201d to the vicinity of West End restaurant on Monroe St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are none in the immediate downtown on Second St. as city officials leave those poles open to hang banners for special events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Antoine Rivarre chapter handles all aspects of the project with no cost to the city \u2013 other than employees mounting and removing the banners \u2013 nor paperwork nor liability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
