{"id":27724,"date":"2025-07-23T14:04:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T18:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=27724"},"modified":"2025-07-23T14:04:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T18:04:13","slug":"merit-cleaning-hours-to-see-reduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/23\/merit-cleaning-hours-to-see-reduction\/","title":{"rendered":"MERIT cleaning hours to see reduction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A slight reduction in hours has been approved by Decatur City Council as a way to get upgraded cleaning costs at the MERIT Center better under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its latest meeting, council discussed the matter for the third successive meeting before deciding on the reduction in hours to at least address the problem.<br>It all began when someone (not named) had been cleaning the building on a regular basis, but had to step down with a medical issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lynn Kressley, who has her own cleaning service, took over on an interim basis. But her work was so good it was decided to retain her on a permanent basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/secureselfstor.com\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Secure-self-Stor-sponsor-1-1.jpg?resize=500%2C358&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Secure-self-Stor-sponsor-1-1.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Secure-self-Stor-sponsor-1-1.jpg?resize=300%2C215&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She is working 23 hours a week at $30 an hour, which translates to $690 a week, $35,880 a year. The city had budgeted only $12,000 for cleaning services there this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have budgeted $12,000 (for 2025) and we&#8217;re well above that,\u201d Clerk-Treasurer Eran Hackman pointed out at a previous meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was some talk about increasing rents. However, the two largest users, the Adams County Council Aging and the King&#8217;s Kingdom Preschool and Child Care, have leases. The former has a 20-year lease, but the latter&#8217;s lease is completed in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to rising child numbers, King&#8217;s Kingdom is likely to see a rent increase next year, which is in its agreement. But even so, that won&#8217;t be enough to cover the rise in cleaning costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo there is nothing we can really do on the leases now,\u201d Councilwoman Jenny Bowers-Shultz said.
