{"id":27245,"date":"2025-06-25T15:45:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T19:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=27245"},"modified":"2025-06-25T15:45:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T19:45:09","slug":"closed-downtown-alley-to-get-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/25\/closed-downtown-alley-to-get-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Closed downtown alley to get upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many major improvements, including quality-of-life additions, have been made in downtown Decatur in recent years and the latest may be what would be called the \u201cDeCATur Alleyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decatur Main Street President Max Miller and Community Coordinator Jamie Gephart spoke with city council at its June 17 meeting about turning the half-block of alley beside Sherwin Williams downtown into an area featuring art work and other additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-with-cat.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-with-cat.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-with-cat.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-with-cat.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-with-cat.jpg?w=1197&amp;ssl=1 1197w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The east-west alley is already closed to traffic and has a cat sculpture at its east end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller said Main Street&#8217;s design committee is leading the project, plans for which include colorful fixtures like benches, planters, lighting and activity equipment for kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A public art wall collage with a cat theme may also be featured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller said the organization figures that the sprucing up of the alley can be completed for an estimated $25,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"414\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-collage.jpg?resize=414%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-collage.jpg?w=414&amp;ssl=1 414w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Alley-collage.jpg?resize=194%2C300&amp;ssl=1 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gephart noted that not all the funds available for its facade grant program were consumed this year (all project requests were funded, however), with some $12,000 left over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said the Decatur Rotary Club is talking about covering the other $3,000 or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like the idea,\u201d Councilman Matt Dyer said and moved to approve the use of the facade funds on the alley upgrade.
