{"id":27216,"date":"2025-06-23T14:15:51","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T18:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=27216"},"modified":"2025-06-23T14:15:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T18:15:52","slug":"gephart-design-chosen-for-decatur-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/23\/gephart-design-chosen-for-decatur-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"Gephart design chosen for Decatur flag"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decatur now has a flag to represent it and Don Gephart has $1,000 for producing the design chosen in voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning design was unveiled Saturday at Downtown Decatur Day by Jenny Bowers-Shultz, a member of city council who originated the idea of having a flag to represent the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest to select a winner was free and open to county and non-county residents. Design entries came from \u201call over the country,\u201d Bowers-Shultz in making the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of adopting a city flag aims to foster civic pride, uniting the community around an official symbol representative of the history and promising future of the City of Decatur, she said Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criteria for the entries was based on principles of good flag design outlined by the North American Vexillological Association, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simplicity; meaningful symbolism; 2-3 basic colors; no lettering or seals; distinctiveness; clarity and memorability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 50 entries were submitted and a committee narrowed the field down to three, then released them for a public vote.
