{"id":27201,"date":"2025-06-22T12:18:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T16:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=27201"},"modified":"2025-06-22T12:18:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-22T16:18:26","slug":"decatur-seeks-paid-on-call-firefighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/22\/decatur-seeks-paid-on-call-firefighters\/","title":{"rendered":"Decatur seeks paid-on-call firefighters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Decatur Fire Department is taking applications for paid-on-call firefighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department is currently four short of its full complement of 25 paid-on-calls (POCs), Fire Chief Jeff Sheets recently told city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An ordinance change now allows 18-year-olds to be hired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"526\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Decatur-fire-logo-big.jpg?resize=526%2C526&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27202\" style=\"width:200px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Decatur-fire-logo-big.jpg?w=526&amp;ssl=1 526w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Decatur-fire-logo-big.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Decatur-fire-logo-big.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>POCs are paid $18.65 for the first hour of response to an incident, then, $15.22 for each additional hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special responses and scheduled monthly training are compensated at the rate of $15.22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The POCs receive all personnel protective fire equipment, an on-the-job personal injury policy, and a bi-annual fuel and clothing allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Application packets are available at the fire station, 206 S Seventh Street. Applications may also be downloaded from the City of Decatur website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Completed applications and required documents may be brought or mailed to Decatur City Hall, 172 N Second Street, Decatur, IN. 46733. If returning by email, use:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:ehackman@cityofdecatur.in.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ehackman@cityofdecatur.in.gov<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following are the needed qualifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Be at least 18 years of age and not older than 40 years of age to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Be a high school graduate or possess a High School Equivalency or GED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Possess a valid driver\u2019s license with an acceptable (insurable) driving record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Live in the townships Decatur serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have no record of felony convictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Have no misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 If prior military, be honorably discharged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Hold current certifications in Firefighter I &amp; II, NIMS 100, 200, 700 &amp; 800, Hazmat Operations, EMR (Minimum of Emergency Medical Responder certification is required). Or be willing to obtain these certifications promptly as they become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Be of good moral character and possess a high degree of honesty and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Possess an acceptable level of verbal and written skills to execute the essential duties and functions of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Possess an acceptable level of dexterity to execute the essential duties and functions of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Possess the ability to interact appropriately with the public, employees, team members, elected officials, and others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BOB SHRALUKA WZBD.com The Decatur Fire Department is taking applications for paid-on-call firefighters.
