INDIANAPOLIS – Alexa Walter entered the season with hopes of following in the footsteps of the great throwers, both on the boys’ and girls’ sides, of the past few years. She finished her junior season at Saturday’s state Track & Field meet as the state runner-up in the shot put with a new school record, leading the way for local athletes, of which she continued to stake her claim as the most dynamic in Allen County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“She did a great job with her preparation week,” said throwing coach Jason Habisch, who held up two fingers in his photo with Walter to signify her second-place finish and the number of times she broke her own school record. “This was the top end of what we though she could accomplish and she is extremely coachable and we just couldn’t be happier with her performance today.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the few of the 26 state shot put competitors who would not have finished last in the state 100 meet (Walter nearly won the ACAC meet in the 100 and her PR would have been good enough for 27th out of 28 in Saturday’s meet), Walter entered the afternoon as the school record holder in the shot. Her throw of 41-03 at the New Haven Relays gave her that mark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her very first attempt at North Central, Walter blew past that old mark, putting herself in position to reach the finals with a throw that was less than an inch short of 44 feet (43-11.25). Walter and her coaching staff would not have known it at the time, but that very first throw was already enough to finish second. Of course she did make a second throw and that one was even more stunning, surpassing her standing mark and flying another half of a foot for yet another school record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walter’s second throw stood as her best for the rest of the night at 44 feet and 4.75 inches and the only girl to surpass her was Whitko’s Gwen Howard. The senior went 46-11 to claim her state title after finishing fourth last year with a throw of 47-03. Howard had already finished third in the discus earlier in the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Smith, a great student of the sport which he coaches at Heritage, knew the immensity of Walter’s accomplishment after the very first throw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are so proud of what Lexie did this season,” said Smith after the meet. “This is the first time in a very long time that somebody from Heritage got second place at the state meet. She deserves this as she is an extremely coachable athlete, a great student and a hard worker.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walter will return next year as one of the members of an outstanding senior class in 2026, with ten of the top 14 girls in the state this year in the junior class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meet was dominated in the team race by two Hamilton County schools, with Carmel finishing as state champions and Hamilton Southeastern as runners-up. Carroll (FW) finished tied for fourth with Brownsburg and Concordia Lutheran finished ninth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much like the boys’ meet the night before, records fell early. Kya Crooke of Heritage Christian, competing just down the road from her home school, broke the long jump record from 1986 by .75 inches. She outjumped the rest of the field by over 1.5 feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few minutes later, Crooke took a shot at the state record in the high jump, clearing the mark by .25″ to easily win the event. The previous state record had lasted since 1985, giving Crooke one heckuva day at North Central. Only seven teams in the state managed to beat Crooke’s 20 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first event held on the track was also record-breaking. Taking note of their rivals from across town in the boys’ meet, the Bloomington South girls won the 4×800 by beating the state record by 2.39 seconds. They needed to be that fast as Carmel had to settle for second place despite also beating the previous state record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ellie Barada ran the anchor leg for the Panthers and later captured the individual title in the 800 by a comfortable 4.5 seconds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the opening ceremonies, Nadia Ford backed up her time in the prelims with a state championship time of 11.68 for the Carroll Chargers in the 100 M dash final. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fort Wayne kept the ball rolling (or running?) when Mallory Weller captured the state title in the mile with a winning time under 4:50. Her younger sister, Daphne, was just eight seconds behind her in tenth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ford and her teammate, Eva Mueller, came agonizingly close to another Charger title in the 4×100, but the Carroll team finished second by .13 seconds to Brownsburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ford, however, did not let her disappointment get her down. She still had something left in the tank and, after finishing third in the prelims of the 200, she claimed another state title with a stunning finish. Ford was credited with the photo-finish victory in 24.20, while the next two runners were clocked at 24.21 and 24.22 (Anyanwu, the state champ in the 400 from Zionsville). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Fort Wayne runner captured a title as Mallory Weller followed up Ford’s repeat with a repeat of her own in a tight 3200, winning by just .38 seconds. Columbia City’s Kenya Leitch was fourth, just a couple seconds behind the leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
