{"id":25419,"date":"2025-04-20T04:44:34","date_gmt":"2025-04-20T08:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=25419"},"modified":"2025-04-20T04:44:35","modified_gmt":"2025-04-20T08:44:35","slug":"transit-system-shows-huge-ridership-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/20\/transit-system-shows-huge-ridership-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Transit system shows huge ridership hike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bubbly Michelle Lengerich recently gave Decatur City Council all manner of positive information about the major growth of Adams County Transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOverall, I could not be more pleased,\u201d she exclaimed at the Tuesday council meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business was launched by the Adams County Council on Aging \u2013 of which Lengerich is director \u2013 in January of 2024. It is based in the MERIT Center (former Northwest school).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Michelle-at-council.jpg?resize=584%2C548&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Michelle-at-council.jpg?w=584&amp;ssl=1 584w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Michelle-at-council.jpg?resize=300%2C282&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year and last, the transit system is in a \u201cdemonstration phase\u201d with the Indiana Department of Public Transportation (INDOT). Then, for 2026, Lengerich said, she hopes to be able to obtain a substantial increase in state and federal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, the ride service is in its 51st&nbsp;year, but started as a service only for senior citizens and people with physical challenges. No fees were charged, although those who could afford to pay were asked to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then last year it was expanded into a county-wide service available to the public with a fee schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veterans who reside in Adams County still ride free, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large increase in ridership has led to an expansion of hours for the transit system, from the longtime 8 a.m.-4 p.m. hours to the current 6 a.m.-6 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we&#8217;re able to get both ends of the work day,\u201d Lengerich said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff numbers also have increased, to 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The director talked about the new garage built to the west of the MERIT Center, along 12th St., needed to house the system&#8217;s eight vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is way more than I ever expected.
