{"id":25227,"date":"2025-04-12T23:17:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-13T03:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=25227"},"modified":"2025-04-13T23:27:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T03:27:15","slug":"jets-finish-1-2-in-howard-county-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/12\/jets-finish-1-2-in-howard-county-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets finish 1-2 in Howard County tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>RANDY HISNER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru senior Ryne Butt threw a four-hitter, striking out 11 and walking only one, to lead the Tigers to a 9-0 rout of the Adams Central Flying Jets in the opening round of the Howard County Invitational Baseball Tournament Friday at Eastern High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru coach Josh Ulery was pleased with Butt\u2019s excellent pitching performance in his team\u2019s season opener. \u201cWe wanted to get off to a great start and have good senior leadership on the mound,\u201d he said. \u201cFantastic job by him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adams Central coach Josh Foster agreed. \u201cThe thing I noticed about him is he took ownership of the mound,\u201d he praised. \u201cYou could see his confidence from the first pitch to the last pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/BOWERS-GOLF.jpg?resize=640%2C278&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/BOWERS-GOLF.jpg?w=805&amp;ssl=1 805w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/BOWERS-GOLF.jpg?resize=300%2C130&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/BOWERS-GOLF.jpg?resize=768%2C334&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Butt dominated the Jets (0-2), allowing only three baserunners to advance to scoring position and yielding just one extra base hit, a&nbsp; double to the right-field corner by Adams Central starting pitcher Cade Van De Weg in the first inning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tigers wasted no time getting Van De Weg into trouble on the mound in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Gavin Eldridge tripled to the right field corner, and Isaac Bradley followed with a bunt single, Eldridge holding at third. Then Van De Weg hit Reis Bellar to load the bases with no outs. Cleanup hitter Lucas Musser hit a grounder to Carson Ross at first, but when Ross threw home for the force out, catcher Reece Hammond dropped the ball, allowing the Tigers\u2019 first run.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru first baseman Bryce Hill kept the rally alive with with a sharp single to center, driving in Brayley and Bellar to make it 3-0. Foster brought in freshman Barrett Collier to relieve him. Collier got Musser to pop up to first, but Hill singled to left to drive in a run, and another scored on a throwing error from the outfield, putting the Tigers up 8-0. Collier allowed their final run on a balk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foster knows he needs Van De Weg to lead his pitching staff even though he has struggled in his first two starts. \u201cWe\u2019re going to continue to lean on him,\u201d Foster said. \u201cI think just coming out of basketball we haven\u2019t had as many bullpens as he likes. (Photo by Randy Hisner)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Foster pointed out that he has a relatively inexperienced team\u2014only three returning players had significant varsity at-bats last year\u2014and that the early spring weather has not been conducive to preparing his squad for varsity competition. \u201cWe\u2019ve practiced outside only four times,\u201d he said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t able to get on our field at all this week, which was brutal coming into this tournament. But it\u2019s a process, and hopefully we\u2019ll get there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Van De Weg\u2019s double, the Jets got two singles from Miller and one from Joey Everett.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mlswebsite.us\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/MLS-Marketing-Logo.jpg?resize=640%2C358&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/MLS-Marketing-Logo.jpg?w=707&amp;ssl=1 707w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/MLS-Marketing-Logo.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jets were slated to play Taylor at Northwestern High School Saturday at 12:30 in the losers\u2019 bracket of the tournament.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Jets split Saturday games<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adams Central dominated Taylor in a mercy rule, shortened contest Saturday afternoon, winning 15-2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joey Everett was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethan Funk and Reece Hammond each had two hits to help the Jets score their first victory of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamison Roach threw four no-hit innings, striking out eight and walking four.
