{"id":25125,"date":"2025-04-09T12:43:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T16:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=25125"},"modified":"2025-04-09T12:43:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T16:43:14","slug":"decatur-fds-fire-safety-video-being-readied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/09\/decatur-fds-fire-safety-video-being-readied\/","title":{"rendered":"Decatur FD&#8217;s fire-safety video being readied"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new fire-safety video used by the Decatur Fire Department has been taken and is now in the process of being readied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Jeff Sheets told Decatur City Council at a recent meeting that the video is now in the hands of the media arts department at Huntington University, which had expressed a keen interest in producing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video, 12 to 15 minutes in length, will be used in fire-safety classes the department teaches each fall at the Survive Alive House in Decatur. The program gives youngsters fire-safety tips that they can incorporate in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may also be employed in other ways, the chief pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?w=1522&amp;ssl=1 1522w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Survive-Alive-side.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The video, which replaces one in use by the department since the 1970s, is expected to be ready by the end of this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department received a major assist in making the video from Champion Homes in Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Champion constructed a pair 10-foot by 10-foot boxes on its S. 13th&nbsp;St. lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One served as a mock-up of a kitchen; it had a grease fire and the video shows multiple ways to extinguish the fire, such as using a lid, baking soda, a fire extinguisher, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other mock-up was of a family room and the video demonstrates how fast a fire can spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TEACHING SAFETY: The three-week fire safety program at the Survive Alive House is held each November, with students from all three public school systems attending, along with parochial students, home-schoolers and some from Amish schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special-needs students also have attended, Chief Sheets said at one time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many as 450-500 students take part each year and thousands of youngsters have participated in the program over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survive Alive classes began in Decatur in 2000 and in 2020 a milestone of 10,000 students and chaperons was reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program employed by local firefighters \u201cteaches E.D.I.T.H, (Exit Drill In The Home), which means working smoke detectors, two ways out of the home, a safe meeting place, and the proper way to use 911,\u201d according to Sheets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BOB SHRALUKA WZBD.com A new fire-safety video used by the Decatur Fire Department has been taken and<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[17,14,15],"class_list":["post-25125","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community","tag-community","tag-decatur","tag-featured"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25125","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=25125"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25125\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":25127,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25125\/revisions\/25127"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=25125"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=25125"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=25125"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
