The environmental inspection at the site of the former gas station at Five Points came up clean, which means that won’t slow this spring’s work on the installation of a roundabout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that also means a savings for the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert gave city council the good news at a recent meeting as council approved a change order on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clean environmental report also provides \u201ca substantial savings,\u201d Gilbert added. There was a cost of $25,000 to get all the water out of the hole where the gas tank was located, but a large amount built into the contract for a possible cleanup wasn’t needed, resulting in an $80,000 savings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo we are still well under budget,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gilbert noted that INDOT (Indiana Department of Transportation) officials \u201chave been studying the project real hard and everything looks good \u2026 but you never know\u201d what could crop up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contract was awarded by INDOT to E&B Paving, a Muncie firm, which had the low bid of $2,493,109. Decatur’s match is 20% of the final cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roundabout will be the first one in Decatur and Adams County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
