NeighborLink Adams County, the Berne-based organization which provides various types of assistance to people, had a good year in 2024, according to Zane Martens, board president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That information was shared with Decatur City Council at a recent meeting by Curt Witte, head of the city’s building\/zoning department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decatur has made a $5,000 donation to NeighborLink the past two years as a way to show its appreciation for assistance the group has provided the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the meeting, Witte read a letter from NeighborLink in which it thanked the city for its donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey’ve done a lot to help us, such as bringing in dumpsters,\u201d Witte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has pointed out in the past that NeighborLink does not charge for the dumpsters it brings in, and it is a major contribution since many people cannot afford a dumpster to assist with a cleanup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The building\/zoning department is in charge of enforcing city codes. And while there are crackdowns to enforce codes, often times Witte’s department works with home and land owners to rectify problems \u2013 sometimes with assistance from NeighborLink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his letter thanking the city for its donation, Martens noted that his group of volunteers \u201chad a very good year,\u201d with over 40 requests from people in need of help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy year’s end we were able to complete three new handicap ramps, two yard work projects, and help with multiple cleanup projects in the City of Decatur,\u201d Martens explained in his letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On its website, NeighborLink says: \u201cSince 2018, our mission has remained the same: to provide practical expressions of God\u2019s love to our neighbors in need. Christ\u2019s love for us compels us to love Him; His love for people motivates us to love our neighbors well. By serving others, we believe we are fulfilling this mission as Christ intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough we\u2019re the founding NeighborLink chapter of many across the United States, our goal is to create a unified network of neighbors helping neighbors, regardless of where they live or what they look like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also notes that \u201cfrom basic tasks, such as yard work and snow removal, to more skilled projects, like wheelchair ramps or plumbing needs, our goal is to make loving our neighbors as simple as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
