Southern Wells made the difficult trip in a snowstorm to the StarDome in Berne and maintained their position in the top half of the ACAC standings with a 58-33 victory over the Starfires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ashlie Needler led the visitors with 16 points, dominating down low and winning the battle on the boards against the young Starfires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Adams were led by Ana Lehman with nine points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much like the temperature outside, it took the visitors a while to get going. They led just 23-19 at half time, but then clamped down on defense, forcing turnovers in the third quarter and ballooned their lead to 16 heading into the final period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The girls did a real good job of battling tonight,” said head coach Brett Freeman after his team fell to 3-13 on the season. “We really made them work for everything in the first half.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the fateful third quarter, Freeman chalked up the loss to failing to take care of the ball. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We came out in the third quarter and just struggled to be strong with the ball and our decision making.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the loss, Freeman feels his team is making improvement on the defensive end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our defense has definitely improved a lot these last few games,” said the coach, whose team will face Jay County in the ACAC tourney opener Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
