{"id":22504,"date":"2024-12-16T14:30:09","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T19:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=22504"},"modified":"2024-12-16T14:30:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T19:30:11","slug":"merit-center-gets-new-hvac-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/16\/merit-center-gets-new-hvac-system\/","title":{"rendered":"MERIT Center gets new HVAC system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decatur City Council recently approved an additional appropriation of $149,000 to pay off the chiller which is part of the new HVAC (heat, ventilation, air conditioning) system installed at the MERIT Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All systems are now in place as the work is nearly complete, Mayor Rickord and Clerk-Treasurer Kevin Hackman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Late last year, the city approved a contract with the Dilling Group, headquartered in Logansport, to have installed, for the sum of $455,000, new boilers, controls and a pump along with a chiller, at the former Northwest School building on Dayton Ave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The costs are covered by a state READI grant of $290,000 plus the $200,000 Adams County has paid the city for a small hunk of land on the northeast corner of the lot on which the MERIT Center is situated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"328\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MERIT-Center-logo.png?resize=328%2C430&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MERIT-Center-logo.png?w=328&amp;ssl=1 328w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/MERIT-Center-logo.png?resize=229%2C300&amp;ssl=1 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The .7 of an acre of land bought by the county will become the site of a garage to be built by the county to house the transportation service&#8217;s vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since a chiller could not be obtained for a lengthy period of time, council signed a contract for one last year to avoid a price increase coming this year, but withheld payment until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert told council that the contractor \u201chas done a wonderful job out there\u201d and he had high praise for project manager John Gilbert of Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe has been very responsive,\u201d Jeremy Gilbert (no relation of John&#8217;s) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building, purchased by the city several years ago from North Adams Schools for $1, has 55,000 square feet and much of it is being used by various organizations, including the Adams County Transit system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The HVAC system, however, was taking its last breaths and something had to be done, city officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information on the Internet says a&nbsp;chiller is a giant refrigerator that uses either an absorption cycle or vapor compression to do its magic.
