{"id":22389,"date":"2024-12-12T19:28:20","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T00:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=22389"},"modified":"2024-12-12T19:28:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T00:28:21","slug":"dave-miller-an-honor-you-never-expect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/dave-miller-an-honor-you-never-expect\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Miller: An honor you never expect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s quite an honor, something you never expect,\u201d Dave Miller said this week following the announcement that he will be entering the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He becomes the second Adams County native who will be inducted in ceremonies scheduled for next April, joining Berne native Erv Inniger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you start coaching, you never think about something like that,\u201d Miller told WZBD.com. \u201cYou just enjoy the coaching, the kids, helping them, things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The native of rural Decatur, who won two girls state championships at Concordia High School in Fort Wayne, said he learned of his pending induction two or three weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/unnamed-43.jpg?resize=250%2C371&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/unnamed-43.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/unnamed-43.jpg?resize=202%2C300&amp;ssl=1 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A hall of fame (HOF) committee annually selects former players and coaches in girls basketball to be inducted. A separate committee makes the selections on the boys side, where Inniger was chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women\u2019s awards banquet is planned for April 26 next year. The day\u2019s events will include a reception at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Museum in New Castle that afternoon with a banquet that evening at the Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The men&#8217;s awards banquet is set for March 19 at the Primo Banquet Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>QUALITY WOMEN: At the time of his retirement from coaching, Miller said, \u201cI was very blessed to have been able to coach so many quality young women during my 18 years at Concordia. They were quality as basketball players, but more importantly, as young Christians, dedicated and loyal to teammates and coaches.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He once explained his coaching philosophy: \u201cMy philosophy is that players need to understand their commitment to be better today than yesterday and that this involves all facets of their life, including basketball and their spiritual lives. We stress to players that one cannot become a good basketball player without first becoming a good person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller continued teaching at Bellmont Middle School long after taking the Concordia post, retiring from BMS several years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the girls coach at Concordia from 2003-2021 \u2013 assisted for many years by former Decatur resident Kim Schamerloh \u2013 Miller rang up a record of 299-135, capturing 3A state championships in 2010 and 2012. His teams also won 14 Sectionals, five Regionals and two Semi-States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller was the Bellmont girls coach from 1986-1999, posting a record of 180-92.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 31 seasons as a girls basketball coach, the 1971 Bellmont graduate won 479 games and lost 227, a .678 win percentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave played three seasons of basketball at Concordia University in Nebraska, earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in education in 1975 (later adding a Master&#8217;s in Education at IU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Becoming a teacher at St. John Flatrock School near Monroeville, Miller began coaching seventh and eighth grade girls teams from 1975-82.
