The city was mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to send the letter to its water customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It talked about the possibility that customers&#8217; service lines MIGHT have lead in them. It didn&#8217;t mean that a recipient&#8217;s lines had lead in them, only that it is a possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"246\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-31.jpg?resize=246%2C319&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-31.jpg?w=246&amp;ssl=1 246w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/unnamed-31.jpg?resize=231%2C300&amp;ssl=1 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A service line is the underground pipe that connects a property to the water main in the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe test for it (lead) all the time,\u201d Rickord said at the meeting.\u201dI want to get it out there that we have no problems here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the EPA mandated that the letter be sent out all across Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor said it would likely cost $5 million to $10 million to replace all the water lines in Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA has set the maximum contaminant level goal for lead in drinking water at zero because lead is a toxic metal that can be harmful to human health, even at low exposure levels. Lead can accumulate in the body over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young children, infants and fetuses are particularly vulnerable to the effects of lead because a smaller quantity is needed to affect them.
