{"id":20767,"date":"2024-10-14T17:52:08","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T21:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=20767"},"modified":"2024-10-14T17:52:08","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T21:52:08","slug":"park-eyed-for-another-area-of-riverfront","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/14\/park-eyed-for-another-area-of-riverfront\/","title":{"rendered":"Park eyed for another area of riverfront"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the City of Decatur is looking at a stretch of riverfront off First St. as a possible site for affordable housing, it&#8217;s also taking a look at another riverfront area to possibly transform into a place for play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That area is along the riverbank off the large parking lot to the north of the Chamber of Commerce building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area for possible housing goes south from the southeast corner of the Monroe and First St. intersection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its Oct. 1 meeting, city council approved the expenditure of $38,000 to have Engineering Resources, a Fort Wayne consulting firm, produce some riverfront conceptional designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the same firm which designed Promenade Park in the Fort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/987BC0BDC87E4068A5E85EAC0EB118E8.jpg?resize=640%2C163&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/987BC0BDC87E4068A5E85EAC0EB118E8.jpg?w=754&amp;ssl=1 754w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/987BC0BDC87E4068A5E85EAC0EB118E8.jpg?resize=300%2C76&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Dan Rickord said designs are a \u201cmust have\u201d in order to make a serious bid for grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting a \u201cfun and play area\u201d along that riverfront, with things such as a splash pad, \u201cwould be a transformational design for our downtown,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be really cool, but we need to get some designs (first).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are fortunate to have a river to use for something like this,\u201d Councilwoman Abby Wilder remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also noted that such an area could bring about an extension of the River Greenway. Its northern trail head sits just across Monroe St. from the proposed park area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A public hearing on the idea will be scheduled at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds would likely be used along with a grant.
