Missing their No. 1 player and undisputed leader in Julia Arnold, the South Adams Starfires dug down deep on an unfamiliar course to claim another ACAC victory, this time by beating Jay County at the Portland Golf Course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somebody had to step up to fill the void left by Arnold, whose talents generally put her as the low man on the team, and that role went to Megan Yoder. Yoder broke 50 for the first time this year and led the team with a 48. She missed medalist honors by one stroke to JC’s Maddy Snow, but her consistent play (seven bogeys) was enough to keep the teams’ score in range to beat the Patriots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sophia Orr’s par on the 18th hole was a highlight in her round of 56, constituting her best round of the year, as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They’re not used to playing without Julia,” noted coach Chris Toledo after the match. “She’s their number one. Megan really stepped up and Audrey came out of nowhere.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toledo’s reference was to Audrey Orr, who made her varsity debut Wednesday night. Orr had shot a couple of mid- or low-60s rounds at Wabash Valley as a JV player this year, but her 53 was rather unexpected, especially on another course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Starfires will return home to Wabash Valley Thursday and then focus on taking a shot at that ACAC title Saturday at Cross Creek in the afternoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
