{"id":19516,"date":"2024-09-10T12:41:57","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T16:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=19516"},"modified":"2024-09-10T12:41:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T16:41:59","slug":"five-points-closing-to-traffic-on-sept-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/10\/five-points-closing-to-traffic-on-sept-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Points closing to traffic on Sept. 17"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Decatur announced Tuesday that the Five Points intersection will be closed to traffic on Tuesday, Sept. 17, for utility replacement and relocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work is, of course, leading up to next year&#8217;s conversion of the intersection into a roundabout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2A88F4083CD1467E90DBC9BEAF478BE2.jpg?resize=560%2C288&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2A88F4083CD1467E90DBC9BEAF478BE2.jpg?w=560&amp;ssl=1 560w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/2A88F4083CD1467E90DBC9BEAF478BE2.jpg?resize=300%2C154&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The closing is expected to last approximately three weeks, weather permitting, city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The marked detour will be as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercer Ave. to Rugg St., then to First St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mercer Ave. to Grant St. to Line St. to Adams St. to Seventh St. to Monroe Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilbert told city council at its recent meeting that the area is expected to be reopened in time for the Callithumpian Parade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the upcoming work will be preparations for demolishing the convenience store\/gas station on the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contract for the Five Points project has been signed by all parties and was made a matter of record at an earlier meeting of city council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), which is in charge of the project which uses, in the main, federal monies, awarded the contract to E&amp;B Paving, which had the low bid of $2,493,109.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The E&amp;B bid was under the engineer&#8217;s estimate for the project so Decatur&#8217;s share of the cost is under what it has budgeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal funding will cover 80% of the total cost.
