{"id":1872,"date":"2023-05-07T08:10:31","date_gmt":"2023-05-07T12:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=1872"},"modified":"2023-05-07T08:34:30","modified_gmt":"2023-05-07T12:34:30","slug":"norwell-wins-first-ne8-track-title-in-20-years-hn-wins-girls-meet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/07\/norwell-wins-first-ne8-track-title-in-20-years-hn-wins-girls-meet\/","title":{"rendered":"Norwell wins first NE8 track title in 20 years; HN wins girls meet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By RANDY HISNER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NEW HAVEN &#8211; Norwell claimed the title in the NE8 boys\u2019 conference track and field meet Friday night, beating runner-up Columbia City 134-113, and the Huntington North Vikings defended their girls\u2019 title with a narrow 105-103 decision over the New Haven Bulldogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Double winners Trevon Stoppenhagen (100 meters and 200 meters) and Jake Parker (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles) were major factors in the Norwell boys\u2019 victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gracie Fields took first in the 400 meters and second in the 800 meters to spearhead the scoring for the Huntington North girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bellmont boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 teams, both in rebuilding mode, struggled in the team standings\u2014the boys placing eighth and the girls seventh\u2014but several Braves turned in season-best marks to score in the highly competitive meet, held in beautiful spring weather at New Haven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Coach Carl Risch\u2019s girls\u2019 squad, seniors Sierra Schmidt and Haleigh Wesley both placed in two individual events to lead the Braves\u2019 scoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wesley earned fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.3 and came back in the 200 meters with a 27.1 to take third. Her 1:03.36 was easily the best time in her section, and it was good enough to edge three runners in the fast heat, earning her a sixth-place finish.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/98.158.76.108\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/KeaneNE8.wav\"><\/audio><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Bellmont senior Sydney Keane talks with WZBD&#8217;s Randy Hisner about scoring out of the slow heat in the 400. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Keane also joined Wesley, Keeley Carpenter, and Abigail Rudy on the Braves\u2019 sixth-place 4X400 relay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Braves\u2019 4X800 relay team of Carpenter, Rudy, Keane, and Ellen Scott opened the meet with a solid fifth-place finish in 10:44.66. He also won the 3200 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other half of the Braves\u2019 senior distance duo, Elijah Obringer, sliced four seconds from his career best to place fourth in the 3200-meter run in 10:05, good for five points. \u201cI\u2019m still hoping for a sub-10,\u201d he said. Like Webb, he thinks improved pacing could bring down his time. \u201cI wanted to split perfect 75s,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I had a few 79s. The first mile I was 4:55.
