{"id":17736,"date":"2024-07-17T09:03:21","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T13:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=17736"},"modified":"2024-07-17T09:03:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T13:03:22","slug":"decatur-seeks-funds-for-school-safety-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/17\/decatur-seeks-funds-for-school-safety-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Decatur seeks funds for school safety projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects to enhance safety around the North Adams Schools campus received approval from Decatur City Council at its meeting Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If state funding is secured, the work will involve crossing upgrades, including overhead signage, and a left-hand turn lane on Jackson St. at the US 224 intersection in front of the school campus. The crossings and the turn lane are separate projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to rectify some safety issues out there,\u201d Mayor Dan Rickord said. \u201cThe school has worked with us and we&#8217;ve already made some improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s making the crossings more visible,\u201d he continued. \u201cThese are good projects, keeping our kids safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beth Johnson, a representative of USI Consultants, was on hand at the meeting to talk about details, including funding. \u201cWe will take you through the entire process,\u201d she told city council after first meeting with the board of works and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson said the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has $50 million available for projects such as these, and she is confident funds can be secured by Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding would come on a 90\/10 basis, with the city needing to provide a 10% match of the total price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis would be a great opportunity to do this, if we get the funding,\u201d Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are projects that will not require a lot of construction, so they are &#8216;fast&#8217; projects,\u201d Johnson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The board of works gave the mayor the authority to sign papers for the grant, and the council approved paying the USI bill thusly: $5,000 out of public works money for the crossings project and $10,000 in federal ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) monies for the Jackson St. work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BOB SHRALUKA WZBD.com Projects to enhance safety around the North Adams Schools campus received approval from Decatur<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":17738,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[14,15,21],"class_list":["post-17736","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-decatur","tag-featured","tag-news"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/15F691F1936149B78466FD220DE4CE4B.jpg?fit=458%2C384&ssl=1","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17736","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=17736"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17736\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/17738"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=17736"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=17736"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=17736"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
