{"id":17694,"date":"2024-07-15T16:32:37","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T20:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=17694"},"modified":"2024-07-15T16:32:39","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T20:32:39","slug":"five-points-project-gets-green-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/15\/five-points-project-gets-green-light\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Points project gets green light"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A giant green light was flashing today for the Five Points Project in Decatur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After accepting bids last week for the work which will convert Five Points into Decatur&#8217;s and Adams County&#8217;s first traffic roundabout, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) on Friday awarded a contract to E&amp;B Paving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/8D81AF1CF3EE4EEF9FC3CF90812539C1.jpg?resize=640%2C279&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/8D81AF1CF3EE4EEF9FC3CF90812539C1.jpg?w=660&amp;ssl=1 660w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/8D81AF1CF3EE4EEF9FC3CF90812539C1.jpg?resize=300%2C131&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three contractors bid on the project with E&amp;B&#8217;s bid of $2,493,109 the lowest of the three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fleming Excavating of Decatur bid $2,623,181 and 3D Company of Muncie bid $3,659,942.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The E&amp;B bid was under the engineer&#8217;s estimate for the project, which means that Decatur&#8217;s share of the cost is under budget as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>INDOT, through federal funding, will cover 80% of the total cost. Decatur&#8217;s 20% match will amount to $498,621.80 \u2013 which is less than the amount the city budgeted for its share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"338\" height=\"96\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/unnamed-7.jpg?resize=338%2C96&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/unnamed-7.jpg?w=338&amp;ssl=1 338w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/unnamed-7.jpg?resize=300%2C85&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>City officials were quite pleased that the money they had budgeted for the 20% match was more than sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project has been in the works for over seven years,\u201d Mayor Dan Rickord told WZBD.com. \u201cI&#8217;m excited to see it come in under budget and under the engineer&#8217;s estimate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were told this is a very good bid and that we&#8217;d be crazy not to take it,\u201d city Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gilbert said local officials will get together with INDOT and E&amp;B representatives to work out a schedule for the project, but he expects that the now-closed Sunoco gas station on one of the Five Points corners will be taken down first to be certain nothing will be uncovered that might delay construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of E&amp;B&#8217;s locations is on S.
