{"id":17348,"date":"2024-06-21T07:19:11","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T11:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=17348"},"modified":"2024-06-21T07:19:12","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T11:19:12","slug":"decatur-k-9-officer-injured-while-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/21\/decatur-k-9-officer-injured-while-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Decatur K-9 officer injured while training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRAUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fracture in a foot has cost the Decatur Police Department one of its K-9 handlers and the department is again facing a soon-to-be shorthanded situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police Chief Kevin Gerber told city council at its recent meeting that officer Luke Rumschlag, who was the department&#8217;s latest K-9 handler, suffered a fracture in his foot or ankle last March while training with a new dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"161\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/unnamed-26.jpg?resize=161%2C297&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17349\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>RUMSCHLAG<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So Rumschlag is stepping down from the post of K-9 handler. He is on desk duty at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chief noted that the department&#8217;s newest officers, Luke Roby and Joseph Collier, will be heading to the state police academy in August for training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the department will be without those two officers, Rumschlag will be on light duty, and, Gerber said, another officer is contemplating another job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So with that, and the fact that the next K-9 training session will come up while Collier and Roby are gone, Gerber said there is no use picking another K-9 handler at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also pointed out that the K-9 Rumschlag was training with is biding his time in a kennel.
