{"id":16940,"date":"2024-05-30T14:33:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T18:33:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/?p=16940"},"modified":"2024-05-30T14:33:42","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T18:33:42","slug":"vacant-land-eyed-for-possible-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wzbd.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/30\/vacant-land-eyed-for-possible-housing\/","title":{"rendered":"Vacant land eyed for possible housing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By BOB SHRALUKA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WZBD.com<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s become a loud call across the USA: Affordable housing is needed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decatur is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city currently has a committee looking into housing possibly being constructed along First St., between Jefferson and Jackson streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Adams County Economic Development Corporation (ACEDC) recently announced the completion of a comprehensive housing strategy aimed at significantly expanding the production of new housing units in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a new idea has popped up in Decatur: to develop housing on the long-vacant stretch of land on the west side of the railroad tracks south of the city&#8217;s police station and former RR depot which is now an entertainment center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Councilman Matt Dyer told council at its latest meeting that he had been approached by a couple of developers about possibly putting affordable housing on the city-owned property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/01A2513F4CEE409A8AA88E3EE5B3EF5D.jpg?resize=640%2C283&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/01A2513F4CEE409A8AA88E3EE5B3EF5D.jpg?w=869&amp;ssl=1 869w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/01A2513F4CEE409A8AA88E3EE5B3EF5D.jpg?resize=300%2C133&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wzbd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/01A2513F4CEE409A8AA88E3EE5B3EF5D.jpg?resize=768%2C339&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A snapshot of the proposed site for new construction in Decatur. (Photo by Bob Shraluka)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne (developer) said he could put five duplexes comfortably in there,\u201d Dyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other was talking about single-family homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to sell something of a certain value, the city is required by law to obtain two appraisals of the property, then set the price at the average of the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would also have to decide whether to sell at auction or by putting the property on the market \u2026 plus some other hoops to jump through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dyer moved to have City Attorney Anne Razo explore obtaining appraisals to get the proverbial ball rolling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By BOB SHRALUKA WZBD.com It&#8217;s become a loud call across the USA: Affordable housing is needed!
